Congratulations to Germany, Commiserations to Argentina After Rio Final
A breathless month of action, controversy and thrilling football was brought to a close in a closely-fought match between Germany and Argentina in Rio.
The Germans came out on top at this year’s tournament after both sides had plenty of opportunities to get the vital goal but it was Gotze who popped up in the box in the 113rd minute to slot home the winner. It was a strike worthy of winning the coveted cup and left the Argentine team in tatters as they failed to recover for the remaining 7 minutes.
There was some consolation for the Argentines as Lionel Messi was rewarded for a decent display at the tournament with the award for best player. However, it wasn’t without controversy as many believe there were other players in Rio far more deserving.
Germany’s Goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, scooped the trophy for best goalkeeper at this year’s tournament. James Rodriguez of Colombia won the award for most goals scored with an impressive 6 and France’s Paul Pogba won the award for best young player.
As a whole it was an excellent tournament with a record amount of goals in the group stages setting a standard that the knock-out rounds came close to matching. Neutrals will have no doubt delighted in seeing the best teams in the world notching a few goals but the minnows also had their say with the likes of Costa Rica, Chile and Colombia surprising many.
The shocks kept on coming in Rio as Spain were demolished in the first match 5-1 by Netherlands, Germany hammered Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal 4-0 and hosts Brazil were absolutely destroyed by Germany 7-1 in the Semi-Finals – usually a fraught and close affair in tournament football. The result quickly went viral across the net and brought one or two jokes at Brazil’s expense.
So, why not say a final goodbye to a sensational tournament by commiserating the runners-up with a glass of Argentinian red wine? Good Wine Online have an equally sensational array of wines from the South American country so be sure to check out their great range whilst stocks last.
